In the first solo episode, I dig into the reason this podcast exists and what listeners should expect moving forward.
The name of this episode was taken from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay Self-Reliance. This particular essay from Emerson I’ve read three times now and has had a significant impact on my views on leadership and peak performance.
We also spend some time on what I’ve learned from Jordan Peterson and his book 12 Rules for Life. This book has become a textbook of sorts for my life and how I engage with the world.
More than just the book however, I appreciate how Jordan Peterson interacts with the world. He is willing to examine questions and challenges from the standpoint that he might be wrong.
The is a powerful perspective because it means you’re willing to change your mind if needed. A person who’s willing to change their mind is dangerous.
I wrote, Hard is the Point, during my first reading of Dr. Peterson’s book.
The podcast with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own, but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”
